John Dies at the End

So... I finished the book John Dies at the End by David Wong, editor of Cracked.com.  I promised a friend that once I was finished reading the book, I'd write a review on the blog.  So... here it goes...

I honestly don't know what to say.

I can't tell you to read the book because once you've read the book, you can't unread it.  It's one of those books that infects you and you start thinking about soy sauce and meat monsters and bratwurst poltergeists all the time.

Well, I'll start by telling you that this book is more than a bit of a mind screw.  It takes place in our world in an undisclosed town with the action centered around two friends: David and John.  The story is told 100% first person point of view from Dave's eyes.

And when I say mind screw, I don't mean the bad kind, I mean slowly making love to all the weird parts of your mind until you can't get enough but you have to stop because there's just so much.

This isn't a book you can skim through.  If you skim, you'll miss all the great bits.  If you skim, the book won't make one single bit of sense.  If you skim, you'll miss what you need to survive in this crazy world and Korrok will get you.

Who's Korrok?  Read. The. Book.

That's all I can say.  It's a good book.

Is it a masterpiece? Not exactly.  But, I feel it's a defining book of it's kind.

Oh, and there's going to be a movie.  The trailer makes it seem likes it's pretty close to the book.

Yes, that's Paul Giamatti.  Yes, the book is as insane as the trailer makes it seem.

In short, John Dies at the End is a thrill ride of the insane kind.  It's a book full of penis jokes. It's a book full of amazing and insane creatures that would confuse even H.P. Lovecraft.  It's a book of wondrous confusion.  It left me wanting more but dreading it at the same time because I'm not sure if I could dive into it properly.  I'm not even what to tell you folks because if I say too much I might give away the really good stuff.  On the other hand, if I don't say enough then this will just be some really broken, insane ramblings...

...Which is very similar to what the book seems to be.  So... go read it!  Now!

Oh, and for those of you who have read the book and wondered.  Yes, this book has strongly influenced my other blog Hold the Tainted Tacos.  You should read that too!

And Sweet Dreams!
