The Cabin in the Woods

The alternate title was "Pot Destroys Humanity. We Deserve It".
So, my friend Cyn has been harassing me for a while now to watch the movie The Cabin in the Woods.  I actually didn't mind because I wanted  to see it, but I either didn't have a chance or I'd start to watch the movie and I'd get confused. This is mostly because of my usual movie-watching habit. See, I don't just watch a movie. I watch a movie, play on my IPod, make lunch, dance around my bedroom naked and read the plot of the movie covertly so that I know what's going to happen ahead of time.

However, I didn't want to do that with The Cabin in the Woods. It's a Joss Whedon film and I would prefer to watch it while doing nothing else with no knowledge whatsoever of what's going to happen in the movie ahead of time. I do this for certain movies and TV shows only. I also do the same things with anime and manga depending on what other people have told me.  I like to spoil myself, it lets me enjoy the ride without asking questions and bothering my friends... or cousins that I'm visiting in Germany.

I won't do that with Joss Whedon though because I generally trust him to give me quality work.  I figure I'll like what he makes regardless.  Granted, he's had a few hiccups over time. Season Three and Four of Angel and Season Six of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were very, very, very low points.  Seriously low points. Low as you can go low points. And, I can't watch Season Five of Buffy the Vampire Slayer ever again. It's not that I don't like it. I just can't watch it.

Anyhow, I needed to be able to watch The Cabin in the Woods in a time when I'd have no distractions or temptations to do... what I always do.

The trouble is, the beginning is a little... jarring to say the least. You start out as some kind of company where this guy is complaining about his wife and you think, "What the heck is this? Is this the right movie?" And the DVD says it's definitely The Cabin in the Woods released in 2012, but guy at a company complaining about his wife and fertility issues is not five young adults going to a cabin in the woods and getting killed.  And then there was Amy Acker! And so I knew I was watching Joss Whedon because we had a Joss Whedon favorite.

But... it wasn't what I expected. So, I had to hang in there and you, dear reader, need to hang in there when you go to watch it. Because, yes, it is confusing. But, the explanation comes fast enough and you begin to realize that like all Joss Whedon films, this isn't... normal.

He's like Tim Burton in that respect. He doesn't do normal.

Joss Whedon's flavor of strange just isn't as easy to pin-point.

Not that there's anything wrong with Tim Burton (besides his obvious dislike of color), but you have to agree that he is definitely outside the definition of the "normal"... and he really likes his wife getting paired with Johnny Depp.

Anyhow... The Movie!

It was... amazing. It had a great story that really put a good spin on the whole horror film genre.  My favorite part was that, on one hand, you didn't want to root for the five young adult characters who are usually dislikable  anyhow.  I felt the main character was sort of a poor man's Felicia Day, but I love Felicia Day and  I would've loved to see her.

There was a lot of Joss Whedon casting though. Like I mentioned before, Amy Acker is there. She's pretty major character. Tom Lenk makes and appearance as an intern. If you don't recognize that name, he was Andrew on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Fran Kanz, Topher from Dollhouse, is one of the five young adults who goes to the cabin. He first shows up smoking from a bong that easily disguises as a coffee thermos/mug thing.

On one hand, I don't want to say a lot about this movie because part of the fun is figuring out what the heck is going on and why is this happening. Take that away and... you've just got a lot of torture porn and killing which is what most people think horror films are these days anyhow, but it's not as interesting. I will say that this movie makes use of a lot of horror movie tropes and archetypes.

I can't wait to watch the movie again to examine it piece-by-piece!
