Doctor Who: Galaxy 4

Also called 3/4 MISSING!
This serial is the first serial of Season Three and three out of the four episodes are missing so I'll be watching reconstructions again. YAY! This Season Three serial premiered from September 11 to October 2, 1965 and apparently features an attractive woman with eyebrow bling. Other than that, I know nothing about this episode other than the Doctor is in it with some... objects that look like a mixture between piles of fecal matter and breasts... with shiny stuff around the bottom/base.

Is it bad that my brain immediately went to that verbal description when looking at those things in the picture above? Probably.

On with the show!

Two Hours Later...

Ugh... This was another serial that could've been really interesting if not for two facts. The first of which is the fact that almost the entire serial is lost with a few scant bits of footage that are also shoddy at best. The second big issue I had with this serial is the pacing. It's as slow as sap running down a tree on an icy day and it doesn't really pick up much at all.

So, you have a slow-moving plot without any good pictures of the actions. I might as well be listening to this episode on CD, except then I wouldn't know what's happening half the time because the pictures (and ongoing written description of the action) do help with that. A bit.

The basic premise of the serial is interesting though. The Doctor, Steve, and Vicki land on a planet that's about to explode as part of its natural life cycle. Also on the planet are two crashed spaceships from two other planets in the galaxy, called Galaxy 4. One spaceship holds the Drahvins, beautiful blonde women who may or may not have been shot down by the other spaceship. The other spaceship (which is being repaired) belongs to the Rills which look like Pizza the Hut in black-and-white and they may have been shot down by the Drahvins first.

The Drahvins want to steal the repaired Rill spaceship and get off the planet before it explodes, but the Doctor and company won't just let them do that. The central conflict of the serial is: Who does the Doctor side with? The Rills who can repair their ship and have offered to take the Drahvins home, but may be responsible for this whole mess? Or the Drahvins who are very attractive, want to steal the Rills' ship, and may also have started this whole mess?

The conclusion (the Doctor helps the Rills get off the planet and leave the Drahvins behind to die) is actually a bit of a downer and comes about because the Drahvins' leader, Maaga, refuses to see that working together with the Rills would've been more beneficial than trying to fight them the whole time. Of course, Steve and Vicki are their usual selves for the whole serial.

Steve is annoying because he has to argue with everyone about everything. He argues with the Drahvins (though at first he thinks they're sexy). He argues with the Doctor. He argues with the Rills. He argues with Vicki. He probably would've argues with the Rills' robots (named Chumbleys by Vicki) if he could. I kind of wanted him to die after so long of him arguing with no purpose.

Vicki was nicer, but the lack of picture cuts of the expression of her face which I liked so much. Her voice expresses those things, but it's not the same as having her expressive face for every single one of her scenes.

Next up: Mission to the Unknown.
