Doctor Who: The Tenth Planet

Introducing the Cybermen!
The Tenth Planet is the second serial of Season Four of Doctor Who. It marks the last serial to feature William Hartnell as the First Doctor and the first serial to feature the Cybermen as reoccurring villains. Oh, it's also the first serial with Patrick Troughton as the Doctor. The serial is four episodes long with the last episode missing. Isn't that a surprise? Oh, and the episodes aired between October 8 and 29, 1966.

Alright, so we have a pre-Halloween episode, featuring Cybermen on the Tenth Planet of our Solar System that we are as-of-yet unaware of. Have I missed anything? Oh yeah, just before Halloween the Doctor changes his face.

Huh...

Two Hours Later...

So, in 1986, human beings had a space station at the South Pole where we did regular atmospheric readings on our planet and others. One day, three strangers showed up at this base and a new planet appeared in the sky which was nearly identical to Earth. In fact, it was our twin planet, Mondas, returning to steal our power because their power had somehow run out... or nearly so.

Through the efforts of the Doctor, Polly, Ben, and the people working at the South Pole Space Station That Never Existed, the Cybermen were stopped and we never saw them again because their power source was destroyed. Oh, and the Doctor was very sick the whole time this was happening and ended up regenerating in his TARDIS after the Cybermen were destroyed.

Yup. That's exactly what happened. I shit you not.

Where the hell were you in 1986? Hiding under a rock?

That totally happened!

Okay... so it didn't happen and it was somewhat retarded with a side of bullshit.

However, I really liked General Cutler who thought the whole Mondas problem should be taken care of with a Z Bomb (think like an A Bomb or and H Bomb, but it can take out planets) so that he could save his son who was on a rocket at the time. He was a hard-ass general who would do anything to protect his son, even destroy half of Earth.

I can respect that kind of love.

Unfortunately, the Doctor, Polly, and Ben really didn't agree with the idea of being killed to save some general's son when the problem would take care of itself eventually.

Of course, this is another case were a one-off villain, the Cyberman, will eventually become series main-stays like the Daleks (and probably the Weeping Angels). In this episode, they are pretty much destroyed when their planet overloads on power and explodes or something. However, we will see them in future episodes and hopefully their continued existence will be explained satisfactorily.  However, Doctor Who is like the TV version of a comic book.

Retcons happen... a lot.

Oh, and in case you don't catch it, the intent of the writers is that the First Doctor dies due to the energy drain from the planet, Mondas. However, due to his exhaustion at the end of the last serial and the fact that it's never outright stated what happened, most people say the First Doctor simply died of old age and regenerated.

I personally like the power drain idea.

Next blog: The First Doctor Overview... or something like that. I'm just going to talk about how I feel about Willaim Hartnell as the Doctor and stuff. You've probably heard most of it before, but I really want to do this for every Doctor as I meet and then say good-bye to them. It feels right.
